I haven’t posted anything lately, mainly because I have been out of commission (with running) since my last half marathon. The day after the race, my knee was in it’s worst shape yet and it only went downhill from there. I took a couple of weeks off which was horrible, awful, miserable, any negative adjective you can think of, and just plain boring! This past Sunday, about 5 days ago, I decided to give it a try with a short and quick 4 mile run. Hello big mistake. Now the pain and swelling is in both of my knees, awesome right?! Despite the injury issues I’m having right now, I still signed up for my second half marathon! (maybe it was a little in spite of current circumstances) My next half is going to be the Timp (Timpanogos) Half in Utah, at the end of July.
I fell off the wagon pretty early today. I’m okay with it though because I have sworn off candy for the day and I think I deserve it on a holiday Really, who doesn’t deserve a donut every now and then?! I have this weird thing, where every single time I eat a donut I crave a soda. Every. Time. For some reason in my mind donuts and soda go together better than PB&J, milk & cookies, butter & popcorn…you get where this is going.

I went on my first real run yesterday evening, in the snow might I add, since the race on Saturday. Yeah, yeah I took a few days off. I don’t know if it was the bitter cold or the total lack of desire to be out there but it was horrid. I only ran about 3.5 miles (8:24 avg pace) and it hurt. Every single step felt a little more achy than the last. I think my body was just tired and cold and wanted to be inside with a blanket and food. At first I let it get me pretty down about how I was going to be feeling on Saturday morning. I already know it’s going to hurt, I accepted that a long time ago. But I want it to hurt because I am pushing myself to finish strong and not because I didn’t recover from the Halloween Half the best I could. So, I think I am going to forgo any more running until race day (I can’t believe it’s so close!) and focus on resting my tired little legs, stretching and foam foam foam rolling! If you guys have any good recovery tips let me know in the comments!
With the realization recently that this race will be the last to train for until next year, I started wondering how I was going to continue holding myself accountable to keep up with my running. I know I’ll continue to run, but what is going to stop me from making every day an easy day. As luck would have it, one of my daily running blog reads figured it out for me! RunEatRepeat is challenging everyone to Pile on the Miles in November. This is an annual event helping us to challenge ourselves to pile on the miles – not the pounds during this food filled time of year. Head on over to RER’s blog through the Pile on the Miles link above and sign up! I signed up for 110 miles during the month of November, however you can choose how ever many miles you want to hold yourself accountable for.
I hope you all have a great Halloween! Enjoy your candy today before starting to pile on the miles tomorrow
One of the gifts I received from Aleck for my birthday last week was a weekend at the Aria in Las Vegas. To say it was fun, delicious and went by way too fast would be an understatement.
It started on Friday afternoon around 1:30pm when we headed out of Park City. We only made it about 45 minutes when we stopped for lunch in Provo. After almost 1.5 years in Utah, I still know about 0 things about the surrounding cities. So, when something popped up on the GPS that I had read about on the hungry runner girl’s blog (Jason’s Deli), I called it good and that’s where we went. I had a chicken salad wrap with a side of fresh fruit. The chicken salad had pineapple in it, which was a first for me but I actually really liked it.
Another Monday down, and another 2 days off of work…life is going to be pretty hard once all of these great holidays are over. I am however ready to get back into a running/not eating dessert for breakfast, lunch, and dinner routine. I think 2014 is going to be my year to run a 1:30 half and run my first full marathon! I am ready to train! I’ve also decided that I need to be more realistic in the races I run, location wise. I unfortunately do not own a money tree (yet) and with travel and hotel fees on top of the race entries it just isn’t possible to do all of the things I want to do. I think I am officially decided on which marathon will be my first though and it feels good (it’s also close by).
I realized today that I only have 45 days left until my first race of 2014 and with my little hiatus from any type of real running, there’s not much of a chance for me to just ‘wing’ this one. So, with that in mind I decided it was time to do a speed workout today.
1 mile warm up
4 x .5 mile intervals with 1 recovery lap between each
3:56, 3:52, 3:48, 3:57
1 mile cool down
It’s Sunday evening and I have been sitting on my couch, eating Cadbury mini eggs, drinking wine, and watching it snow all day long. I had every intention of going out to run but, it’s not a necessary run (I’ve run 7 times in the past 5 days) and the weather couldn’t make up it’s mind between wind, snow, hail, ice and rain. So I decided to watch it and Lifetime simultaneously while pretending not to know the entire day was passing by.
I’m feeling rather sore today from yesterday’s workouts, and I am pretty thrilled about it. I ran a total of 8.5 miles, but split up into two sets. I wanted a long run, but I didn’t have time to do it at once…so I figured splitting it was better than not doing it at all. The sets looked like this:
4.5 miles during my lunch, 8:15/min avg pace
4 trail miles after work, 8:35/min avg pace (yes, it felt great to be out on the trails again:))

Well, this is happening here today:
Which obviously led to this:
To go along with this!
As you could guess, snow did not lead to any running today. I think snow at the end of June gives anyone a reason for an extra rest day and a drink…or two 🙂 I took yesterday off as well (today was unplanned) because when I woke up I realized I hadn’t taken a day off since the previous Monday, which I was definitely feeling in my legs on Sunday’s run. I ended last week’s run pretty strong, a speed day, long run day, and a few trail runs with lots of elevation gain…so for once I am not super concerned with an unplanned rest day.
